Broadband Speeds

Fast. Faster. Fastest. How much speed do you need? Cable, DSL and Satellite Internet providers offer varying package levels so you can get just the level of "fastness" that you need. From a swift 256 Kbps download speed all the way to a blinding 12 Mbps, you can get the speed that suits you.

What is Kbps?

Kbps or kilobits per second (thousands of bits per second) is a measure of bandwidth on a data transmission medium. Higher bandwidths are usually expressed in Mbps.

What is Mbps?

Mbps is defined as millions of bits per second or megabits per second. It serves as a measure of bandwidth on a telecommunications medium.

Know the Difference

Why is it important to know what Kbps and Mbps mean? Only by knowing what these abbreviations mean will you be able to pick the right package for you. To help illustrate the difference in speeds, consider if this was a 1.0 MB picture:

  • 56 Kbps Modem (normal dial-up speed) - It would take 2.5 minutes to download.
  • 256 Kbps - It would take 33 seconds to download.
  • 1.5 Mbps - It would take 6 seconds to download.
  • 3.0 Mbps - It would take 3 seconds to download.
  • 6.0 Mbps - It would take 1.5 seconds to download.

From 2.5 minutes to 1.5 seconds! Now imagine how that speed would translate to all that you do on the Internet. Pages will load faster and songs will download in a snap.

What Speed Do You Need

What you do on the Internet will determine what Internet speed you need. If you plan on downloading and uploading lots of pictures, playing online games or viewing Internet videos, you will need a faster Internet package. If you want the Internet to download pictures from your family, surf the Internet and e-mail friends, then you can probably get a lower speed package.
